PIT Care Collective Workshop #1

PIT Care Collective are health workers building a vision toward a Healing Commons beyond institutional logic and boundaries. At the first of a new monthly workshop series, we will be hosting the CareNotes collective to revisit experiences and analysis learned from the Greek social clinic networks in their publication of For Health Autonomy: Horizons of Care Beyond Austerity—Reflections from Greece .

This text is an urgent collection of first-hand accounts that offer concrete alternatives to replace our need for privatized healthcare based on the collective power of communities and health workers. From social and health clinics, kitchens, and safe spaces for refugees, the book imagines a self-sustained world liberated beyond capitalist logics.

The experience of Greek autonomous care spaces encapsulates care within, as well as beyond, the biomedical model which structures how we perceive suffering, healing, labor relations, and collective healing. By dually confronting both capitalist and biomedical logics, we may more effectively foster collective and workplace strategies to address the underlying causes of suffering, including debt, homelessness, and social isolation. The collected essays grasp how emotional and physical distress is preventable—where ensuring access to antibiotics, vaccines, or herbal remedies is as relevant as liberating unused space for housing or de-policing a neighborhood. In tandem with the broader anti-capitalist movement, these spaces have called into question the legitimacy of the state and capital, and reclaimed care beyond the limits of the biomedical, nonprofit, and capitalist frameworks.
