Opening Party: Beyond The Storm - Resistance to a Living Death Sentence

A showcase of new paintings and longstanding advocacy by Patrick H.

Patrick Hughes is a painter, poet, and sentencing reform advocate from New York. This installation will feature a series of Hughes’ landscape and nature scenes together with a selection of letters exchanged between himself and New York legislators in his years-long fight for the Second Look Act, the Earned Time Act, and the Elder Parole Bill. His paintings capture the beauty and expanse of nature, while his letters reflect the many constraints faced by those advocating for their freedom from within the prison. Paired together, and accompanied by a selection of his poetry, this installation will speak to Hughes’ enduring hope and the persistence required to actualize anti-carceral visions of freedom.
